  52.       AMSAT PHASE 3-D INTERNATIONAL SATELLITE BUILDERS MEET IN
  53.                  MARBURG--PROPELLANT TANKS DELIVERED
  54.  
  55. During the week of February 10-16, 1994, Dr. Karl Meinzer, DJ4ZC,
  56. AMSAT-DL President and Project Leader for the International AMSAT Phase-3D
  57. satellite, and Werner Haas, DJ5KQ, Vice-President of AMSAT-DL hosted
  58. a working meeting in Marburg, Germany to discuss recent progress on the
  59. project.  Agenda items centered primarily around the spacecraft's
  60. electronic systems including the on-board computer (IHU) and RUDAK
  61. systems, as well as the progress now being made by team members on the
  62. spacecraft's other electronic modules.
  63.  
  64. Also during the meeting, the team took delivery of P3-D's main
  65. propellant tanks.  The tanks were manufactured in Russia under contract
  66. from AMSAT-DL and in accordance with AMSAT specifications.  Seven tanks
  67. were delivered, although one had been subjected to a destructive pressure
  68. test by its Russian manufacturer.
  69.  
  70. Not only have all the propellant tank specifications been fully
  71. achieved, but they've actually been significantly surpassed.  Each tank
  72. can accommodate almost 50 liters of propellant.  Favorable conditions for
  73. the purchase and delivery of these tanks was arranged through the efforts
  74. of AMSAT-UA (Russia).  Following a brief inspection, the tanks were
  75. immediately shipped to Orlando, Florida, where integration of the
  76. satellite is now slated to begin this summer.
  77.  
  78. Dick Jansson, WD4FAB, AMSAT-NA Vice-President for Engineering, also
  79. attended the meeting, principally to discuss various aspects of the
  80. satellite's structure with Dr. Meinzer and Konrad Mueller, DG7FDQ.  He
  81. reported on the good progress of the flight model structure's construc-
  82. tion, currently underway at Weber State University in Utah.
  83.  
  84. Also in attendance were Lyle Johnson, WA7GXD, Peter Guelzow, DB2OS, and
  85. Gerhard Metz, DG2CV.  Lyle is known through his work with the Tucson
  86. Amateur Packet Radio (TAPR) group (which he co-founded) as well as for
  87. his work on the Microsats and on the P3-D GPS project.  After much
  88. discussion, the team decided to again employ a cable wiring harness
  89. arrangement for Phase 3-D, similar to that used on AO-10 and AO-13,
  90. rather than an AART-based LAN design.  However, the team decided to also
  91. fly a CAN bus and DB2OS's experimental LAN controller as part of the
  92. spacecraft's digital (RUDAK) transponder.
  93.  
  94. In a related decision, the group concluded that the AO-10/AO-13
  95. 1802-based Internal Housekeeping Unit (IHU) computer design would still
  96. be adequate for P3-D with some minor modifications.  Lyle Johnson
  97. announced his willingness to redesign the IHU and to construct a flight
  98. unit.  His offer was greatfully accepted.
  99.  
  100. Other meeting items centered on P3-D's RUDAK work now being done by
  101. Peter Guelzow, Gerhard Metz, and Dr. Stefan Eckart, DL2MDL.  This team
  102. has now decided to build two RUDAKs.  The first will be a user-oriented
  103. digital communications module constructed by Lyle Johnson, in close
  104. cooperation with Peter Guelzow.  This RUDAK, which has yet to be formally
  105. named, will be the one most P3-D satellite users will operate.  A second,
  106. more experimental RUDAK (called RUDAK-E), will be built in Germany.  It
  107. will promote experiments with advanced high speed modems, Digital Signal
  108. Processing (DSP) techniques, and new communications protocols.
  109.  
  110. In a host of other issues, Daniel Orban, ON4AOD, discussed details
  111. of the 24 GHz transmitter.  Konrad Hupfer, DJ1EE, reported his progress
  112. in building the 250 watt U-Band (70 cm) final amplifier.  Werner Haas
  113. displayed his first flight hardware consisting of two command receivers,
  114. a digital section, and the 70 cm exciter that will drive Konrad's 70 cm
  115. final amplifier.  Freddy de Guchteneirie, ON6UG, reported his progress on
  116. the construction of dual V-Band and U-Band receiver "front-ends".  Dr.
  117. Matjaz Vidmar, S51MV, reported he has now begun construction of the
  118. HF-Band, C-Band and S-Band receivers.  He expects to deliver working
  119. prototypes in May.
  120.  
  121. While much work still remains to be done, Dr. Meinzer expressed his
  122. approval and sincere thanks to all participants for their superb work and
  123. close cooperation on this vitally important AMSAT international project.

  125. Guelzow, and has since been translated by Don Moe, DJ0HC/KE6MN. The text
  126. will be made available to the various international AMSAT Journals for
  127. possible inclusion in their upcoming editions.

  143. ITAMSAT-OSCAR-26 (IO-26) Ground Team Discovers Problem
  144.  
  145. Starting last week the PSK modulation on the primary trasmitter became more
  146. and more difficult to decode.  A residual carrier and lower output power
  147. seem to indicate a failure in the PSK balanced modulator, being worse at
  148. the current low power setting. Increasing the power level makes the de-
  149. modulation better but is not accetable due to power budget constraints.
  150. Ground controllers decided to switch to the secondary PSK trasmitter on
  151. 435.822 MHz.  The first two passes over Italy confirmed the correct
  152. operation of the spacecraft and WOD are being taken to analize the per-
  153. formance of the satellite in this new configuration.  BBS is working as
  154. usual and status bulletin will be uploaded in the next few days.

  172. for a QSO, OPS Net enthusiasts are asked to move to the alternate
  173. frequency of 145.955 MHz.

  228. operated and maintained by the Public Affairs Office of the Johnson Space
  229. Center and is now no longer operational.

  318.      I received several responses and am pleased to report that I
  319. have succeeded in getting NOS to work with the Baycom modem. What
  320. I needed was an ax25 driver program (ax256drv.zip of January 3,
  321. 1993 downloaded from grivel.une.edu.au / 129.180.4.7) written by
  322. Pawel Jalocha, SP9VRC. The only glitch encountered was resolved
  323. by a simple change of driver software interrupt from the default
  324. of 60 to 63 to work with my i386SX laptop.
  325.  
  326.      After more than a week's experience, I am finding that the
  327. Baycom (with ax25 driver) works as well as my MFJ 1278 and
  328. PacComm TNCs for 1200 bps. It is connected to a Yaesu FT-470
  329. handheld through a 25 watt amplifier to a simple j-pole antenna.
  330. (For regular packet operation I have had no difficulty using the
  331. Baycom with the laptop running the Eskay SP and MUBAY software,
  332. but I am not able to make the modem work with the Baypac program
  333. that was bundled with it.)

  335.      The reports from other hams were generally very positive
  336. regarding use of the Baycom modem with NOS, although there was an
  337. instance of heavy packet loss noted in conjunction with an HTX-
  338. 202 HT. Another ham expressed particular satisfaction with the
  339. Yaesu FT-470, which duplicates my experience.
  340.  
  341.      I am grateful for the work of Pawel Jalocha in writing the
  342. ax25 driver, and, of course, the work of KA9Q, WG7J and other
  343. contributors for producing the NOS program.

  377.  The origin of the word 'HAM' come from the first letters of the 
  378. first three guys to experiment radio.  They were from the Harvard Radio 
  379. Club...   Their names are Hyman, Almy and Murray.
  380.  
  381.  Originally, they named their telegraph station 
  382. "HYMAN-ALMY-MURRAY" but it was too long, so they reduce it to "HY-AL-MU", 
  383. but there was a problem : a mexican boat was named "HYALMO", so there was 
  384. a little confusion...  So, they finally named their station "HAM"...

  409. offended by the severe breach of netiquette. The way this should be done is
  410. to post a pointer and tell me how to get it. This is a severe waste of time
  411. and MONEY for many sites and many folks. Please tell him to stop. I think he
  412. should lose posting privileges for a week if he continues to do this. It
  413. happens frequently and is getting longer.

  479. This is my first try on this newsgroup.  As the proud new owner of a Ramsey
  480. Radio FX-146 (2m) that just finally got working, I'd like to get more info

  577. at his low. Now is a time of real DX hunting with endles time spining
  578. the dial of RX to be rewarded with unexcpected new country.
  579. With beam you may have better chances especialy in south to north direc.
  580. however be pationed and perssistent - in another 2 to 3 years 10 will be 
  581. back in all his glory. Follow the sunspot # on WWV or beter observ by 
  582. yourself with appropriate equipment - sun filters - since you can get 
  583. blind without them.

  606. beacon - that seems to work quite well for me :-) Of course, there's always
  607. DX Cluster ....
